Sandalwood essential oil has a woody and earthy scent and comes from steam distilling the wood and roots of a mature sandalwood tree (Santalum album). It is used as part of religious rituals and traditional medicine in Asia and the Middle East and is often used in incense and perfumes. Sandalwood oil has two main active compounds called alpha-santalol and beta-santalol which are responsible for its fragrance and variety of health properties. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-cancer effects. It can be applied topically to treat sore muscles and joints, insect bites, eczema, acne, signs of aging, infections, and inflammation. When used aromatically, sandalwood oil can encourage mental clarity, relaxation, and feelings of peace.
